Toronto FC make history as the move to Champions League

Toronto FC has made franchise history advancing to the CONCACAF Champions League Group Stage for the first time after a 1-0 home win and a 2-2 away draw against Honduran squad Motagua. Toronto FC will now play in a group with Mexico's Cruz Azul, USA's and defending MLS league Champions Real Salt Lake and Panama's Arabe Unido the top two clubs in each of the four groups will advance to the quarter finals and play a home and away matchup the rest of the way until the Finals where it is winner take all.

Toronto FC add Mista and Maicon Santos to squad

Toronto FC has signed two players in the month of July adding Mista on July 6/10 and he heads over from Spain after spending his whole career there playing for the likes of Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Tenerife and Deportivo. The 31 year old striker is signed until the end of the season and is Toronto FC's second designated player. Then TFC's Mo Johnson brought in 26 year old Brazilian forward Maicon Santos on July 9/10 reuniting him with current coach Preki who coached him the past season at Chivas USA and at the same time adding to the team up front. Maicon scored his first goal for Toronto FC against FC Dallas in a 1-1 home draw.

Sam Cronin says good bye to Toronto

The Toronto FC have sent Sam Cronin to the San Jose Earthquakes for versatile cash considerations. The former second overall pick in the 2009 draft had fallen out of favour with current coach Preki, appearing in only six games this season in which he picked up a lone assist. League policy does not disclose the exact figure of the monetary exchange. Mo Johnson continues to dispatch last seasons players but in this case the trade of a player who just one year ago was good enough to take second overall, you would think that Mo would have gotten more in return. Good Luck Sam you will be missed.

Toronto FC host open practice today

The Toronto FC return to BMO Field today after a week off and will hold an Open Practice for the fans today. The practice will start at noon and fans will be ask to pay $4 at the box office to enter and watch Coach Preki workout the team. The conclusion of the practice will see fans have a chance to chat with players who will pose for pictures and sign autographs. TFC will not be back in action until the end of the month when they host the L.A. Galaxy on the 26th.

Toronto FC win second Voyageurs Cup

The Toronto FC have won their second Voyageurs Cup in a row after completing the tournament with a scoreless draw at home against the Vancouver Whitecaps. TFC finished the three team tournament with a 2-0-2 and eight points, four points ahead of the second place Whitecaps. The Toronto FC will now move on to the CONCACAF Champions League where they will face Honduran club Deportivo Motagua in a home and home series to see who advances to the Group Stage of the tournament.

De Rosario and De Guzman to suit up for Canada

Toronto FC duo Dwayne De Rosario and Julian de Guzman will put on the red and white for Team Canada in their soccer friendly with Argentina in Buenos Aires on May 24, 2010. This means that both players will dress for Wednesdays Nutrilite game against Vancouver but will miss the teams home game against New England on May 22, 2010. De Rosario will be making his 54th appearance for Canada while De Guzman will be making his 45th.

Toronto FC have found their league rival

The Toronto FC can now lay claim to having a true rival in Major League Soccer with the recent addition of the Montreal Impact to the league commencing in 2012. The Toronto vs Montreal clashes should be fierce and intense as we recently saw during their Nutrilite Canadian Championship game two weeks ago as each time has claimed one Canadian crown a piece. The fans in both cities have a passion for soccer and for their club teams and this for the most part should bring out the best in both fans during the season encounters. The two clubs have chants for one another already and I can only see more coming, could this rival the much hated Habs rivalry with the Maple Leafs only time will tell but until then.... On Tuesday May 4, 2010 the Toronto FC will be having their kickoff dinner at the new Real Sports Bar 15 York Street inside Maple Leaf Square and is brought to you by Carlsberg . There are still tickets available at a cost of $150, which includes food, two drinks and the chance to chat it up with your favourite Toronto FC players. Proceeds from the event will benefit the MLSE's Team Up Foundation.

Toronto FC set to try new striker combo

Toronto FC coach Preki has decided to try a new striker combination as TFC has averaged 1 goal a game over their first four games for a total of 4 goals this season all scored by TFC captain Dwayne De Rosario. This Friday at the practise complex the FC had O'Brian White and Chad Barrett up front as the team gets ready to host Seattle on Sunday, if Preki keeps this tantum together then it would see De Rosario drop back into the midfield. Toronto FC will looking to keep their record perfect at home and being 0-3 on the road a victory is all the more important.

Hey Preki, You cant play defense with no defense

The Toronto FC pulled off a victory in their home opener thanks to a little luck, you would think that a team that had an extra player would be able to protect a lead but that was not the case as the TFC defense continues to have a hard time defending leads. The team last week blew up after going into the half with a 1-0 lead over New England and in the home opener let the Union tie the game before the half after Philadelphia was down a man to a red card. The home side did get lucky as Gargan blocked a shot late in the game to preserve the victory since the shot was targeted for the twine. The one thing that I have noticed so far this season and I know that I am not alone is that the Toronto FC can not play defense. Preki is suppose to be a defensive specialist and yes the season is still young and with the changing of faces it will take the team time to adjust to a new system but TFC's new signings have been burned and all but Adrian Cann have not brought many oo's or aa's from the fans. Preki may be a great coach and have a great system but do we have the players to play this system? This is a question that will be asked as the team continues its scary form on the defensive side and one that most fans hope can be solved but until then Preki, you can not play defense when you have no defense. Lets hope this motto is a short lived one.

TFC get set for home opener

The Toronto FC get set for their fourth home opener as they host the expansion Philadelphia Union tomorrow at BMO Field. The FC will be looking for their first win of the season after starting the season on the road with two straight losses. TFC will be opening their home schedule playing on new grass, with a new coach and a new seating capacity at the stadium in a season of change is it possible that the Reds will earn get their first victory of the season tomorrow? TFC has an opening day record of 1-2-0 defeating Chivas USA in 2008 and losing to Kansas City and Seattle in 2007 and 2009. What will tomorrow bring? Toronto FC welcomes new partner Metro

Toronto FC will have a new partner for the 2010 season as Metro has become the Official Grocery Store of the TFC. The Reds will be having a supporters event at the Metro store in the Liberty Village district, 100 Lynn Williams Street on April 14, 2010 between 4pm and 8pm where Danny Dichio will be on hand to help Metro launch their partnership with the Toronto FC on the eve of the season home opener.

The Toronto FC have continued their signings adding two more defenders to the roster today. The team added some Canadian content to the squad acquiring 29 year old central defender Adrian Cann. Cann will be making a return to the MLS after being drafted in 2004 by the Colorado Rapids but only lasted two games before being released, he has played since 2008 with Esbjerg from the Danish league. Mo Johnson then signed another central defender in 25 year old Russian Maxim Usanov from FC Krasnodar, Usanov started his career with Zenit St Petersburg in 2003. TFC looks to be shorin up the back line that looked terrible against New England on Saturday night as the prepare for their season opener at BMO Field on Thursday against the Philadelphia Union.

Mo Johnson continues to add players to his Toronto FC roster signing Latvian left back Raivas Hscanovics just before game time yesterday as the FC prepared to take on New England and Preki wasted no time in inserting the newly signed back into the starting eleven. The 23 year old is Johnson's eighth new player acquired this season as the youngster looks to be the replacement for departing former captain Jim Brennan. Hscanovics has yet to play for the National side of his homeland but was a member of the 2008 Latvian under 21 squad.

Dwayne De Rosario named new TFC Captain

Dwayne De Rosario has official been named the new captain of your Toronto FC. Dero becomes the second captain in TFC history succeeding Jim Brennan who hung up his cleats earlier this week.
De Rosario hopes to do what Brennan could not in his three seasons as captain of the Reds and that is to lead this team into their first post season ever. Coach Preki offered De Rosario the captaincy the same day that Brennan retired and Dero accepted on Wednesday morning. The Scarborough native scored 14 goals last season, his first as a member of the TFC and needs one more goal to become the all time leading scorer in Toronto FC history. Dero will be wearing his new captain's armband tonight as the FC travel to New England, looking for their first win of the season as they take on the Revolution.

Jim Brennan hangs up his cleats

Toronto FC captain Jim Brennan has called it a career at the age of 32, Brennan the first player ever signed by the MLS franchise has decided that he just could not go forward with another season of professional soccer as his body was starting to betray him. The Torontonian will now be exchanging his uniform for a suit as he remains on with the club as the Assistant General Manager under Mo Johnson. Brennan retires with the most appearances by any player in TFC's short history and currently sits eighth on the clubs all time scoring list with four goals. Brennan suited up for the National side on 49 occasions, chipping in six goals and was part of Canada's 2000 Gold Cup winning squad, he has also spent 10 seasons of his career playing in the United Kingdom for Bristol City, Nottingham Forrest, Norwich City and Southhampton before returning to his hometown. This is the second Canuck this week that has moved on from the squad after Ali Gerba's contract was terminated earlier in the week. I would like to wish Jim Brennan the best of luck in the future and to thank him for his service with Toronto FC. Speculation has it that Preki will name fellow Canadian Dwayne De Rosario as Toronto FC's new captain before this weekends game with New England.

Nane Joseph signed to developmental contract

Toronto FC has signed their fourth round draft pick from the 2010 MLS Draft, Nane Joseph to a developmental contract. The 22 year old Cameroon born midfielder played the last four seasons in the NCAA for Old Dominion and was named to the All American second team by the U.S. National Soccer Coaches Association last season. The signing of Joseph brings TFC's roster size to 22 players and we hope the extra spots will at least see Mo Johnson sign a striker.

TFC sign former DC United keeper

The Toronto FC have filled their third goalie spot today with the signing of former D.C. United keeper Milos Kocic. Mo Johnson feels that the goalie is a great fit for TFC and feels he will be groomed by Frei and Conway. The 24 year old Serbian born keeper was the 21st overall selection in the 2009 MLS Superdraft. Kocic made four appearances last season for United who released him after the season ended.

Ali Gerba and Toronto FC part ways

The Toronto FC and striker Ali Gerba have come to an agreement to terminate the Canadians contract and official end his spell with the club in less then a year. Gerba signed with the TFC in June of last season and scored one goal for the club in eleven regular season games. Preki had sent Gerba home last month as the team competed in a preseason tournament and you knew something was up as the coach did not want Gerba around the team and did not seem to have any use for the striker going forward. The rumours out there state that Gerba was out of shape and overweight, something the coach just could not work with, the move should open some much needed cap space for Toronto GM Mo Johnson to make a move as the team prepares for its next game Saturday against the New England Revolution.

BMO Field adds more seats this season

The home stadium of the ever popular Toronto FC is expanding just in time for the 2010 season and not a moment too soon for die hard fans that are awaiting to obtain tickets to watch their favourite club. BMO Field will grow now to a capacity of 21,800 with an expansion of the north end area. The area is loved by many beer drinkers and is known as the Carlsberg Beer Garden. This will not eliminate the beer garden only change its set up as the stands will be right in front of BMO Fields Scoreboard. There should be another expansion towards the end of the season as the stadium hosts the MLS Cup to about 24,000 but at this time we are uncertain if this would be a permanent move or temporary one.

Introducing you to Toronto FC Supporters Clubs

Toronto FC is one of the most popular clubs in the MLS and many of us can thank the huge support of the fans in embracing the club since its inception but we can not forget the supporter clubs and the influence that they have had on the club and the energy that the bring to BMO Field, one of the rowdier if not rowdiest in the whole league. There are currently four main supporter clubs that you will see in sections around the stadium and at times out on the road with the club as they make their way throughout the season.

The four main supporters clubs are:

The Red Patch Boys: The group is named in homage to the veterans of the "1st Canadian Infantry Division" of the second world war. The majority of their members call section 111 and 112 home and have nicknamed the sections "the bunker" they are loud and they are proud

The U Sector: They are the original and largest supporter group, they were formed in 2000 to support the highest level of soccer in Toronto and are named after the U section an old section of Varsity Stadium. The majority of their member call section 113 home.

The North End Elite: They grew out of the bottom of section 127 in 2007 and quickly spread to the other North End sections. They created a giant TFC jersey that they unveiled at a game in 2007.

The Tribal Rhythm Nation: They are the newest and one of the faster growing supporter clubs and were formed to bring in the African, Caribbean and Latin communities. The are known at the stadium for the beating of their drums in section 118 at TFC games.

Who is this new coach of the TFC, Preki?

Toronto FC has gone out this off season and signed themselves Predrag Radosavljevic also know as Preki, we take a look at who Preki is and what we might expect from him along the sidelines. Preki was born on June 24, 1963 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and played for a brief period in 1985 for Red Star Belgrade, there he was spotted by the coach of the Tacoma Stars an indoor soccer club and spent five seasons in Tacoma. Then in 1990 Preki was signed by the St. Louis Storm and continued his indoor soccer career for another two seasons. Preki was then spotted by an Everton scout and was bought in 1992 by the English side, he made 46 appearances for the Blues and scored 4 times. Portsmouth was the next stop for Preki and he made 40 appearance for the club scoring 5 times before his contract was bought by the San Jose Grizzlies and Preki returned once again to America's Indoor Soccer game. Then 1996 arrived and the MLS began play and Preki resumed his outdoor career with his first of two stints with Kansas City Wizards from 1996 to 2000. Preki then spent 2001 with the Miami Fushion before returning to the Kansas City Wizards a year later were he would wrap up his playing career in 2005. Preki finished his MLS career with 79 goals in 242 appearances, Preki currently sits 10th all time in MLS goal scoring and won the MLS MVP award on two occasions. Preki obtained his American citizenship in 1996 and played 28 games for the National side including the 1998 World Cup.

Preki then joined Chivas USA in 2006 after his playing days to become an assistance coach taking over the coaching reigns in the 2007 season, winning the league's coach of the year award and remained at Chivas until the end of last season. Preki is now the new head coach of your Toronto FC. The one thing I'm sure many of us have noticed is that Preki is a no nonsense coach and was quick to give Amado Guevara the heave ho for the second time in his short coaching career, he is also quick to send players packing if they are not buying into his system which is a defense first attitude. Preki is not too concerned with who scores the goals as long as his team does not concede them. The fact is Preki has led Chivas USA to the playoffs in all of his three seasons there but does Preki have the skill at TFC to accomplish the same feat in Toronto? The TFC Supporters are pining for a playoff berth and with the MLS Cup being held in Toronto this season the club supporters would expect a playoff spot or has Mo Johnson butchered this team to the point that we need a few years to get to the dance?

Toronto awarded 2010 MLS Cup

The City of Toronto was awarded the MLS Cup this week a great reward to a city that has shown great fan support to its Major League Soccer club, the Toronto FC. The MLS Cup will be played at BMO Field on November 21st at 8:30pm. Toronto defeated strong bids by New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia to host the event and fans can thank the newly installed natural grass field for swaying the vote our way. The host team has only been to the final twice in 15 years that being in 1997 by DC United who won the Championship and in 2002 by the New England Revolution who lost to the L.A. Galaxy in that final. The though of TFC making it all the way to the MLS cup would be wishful thinking by the city, club and fans. The goal for this season is for the club to make the playoffs for the first time and then when there the sky is the limit. Tom Anselmi the MLSEL executive vice-president and CEO is hoping that hosting the MLS Cup will be a big motivator for the club to reach the post season. MLSEL is planning to turn the event into a three day event centred around Maple Leaf Square the new $500 million development by the Air Canada Centre.
